Memory lets an AI agent save useful information about a user as facts and take it into account in later conversations.

By default, an agent uses only the context of the current chat and doesn't remember earlier conversations. With memory enabled, the agent remembers the user's name, preferences, work context, and other details that help it give more accurate answers.

Memory isn't a copy of the conversation, and the agent doesn't save every message. It also doesn't replace the agent's other data sources: instructions, knowledge bases, and skills.

Memory may increase token usage.

## How Memory Works

Memory involves three operations: the agent saves facts, recalls them when forming a response, and updates or deletes outdated ones.

### Saving Facts

The agent finds useful details in the conversation and saves them as facts. Processing runs in the background, so a fact may appear in the **Memory** tab after the agent has already replied. Not every message creates a fact. For example, greetings aren't saved.

You can also save information with an explicit request, such as "Remember that I write in TypeScript" or add a fact manually in the **Memory** tab.

### Recalling Facts

Before replying, the agent selects the facts relevant to the request. For example, if a user previously said they write in TypeScript, the agent answers the question "Which language do I write in?" in a new chat without asking again.

### Updating and Deleting Facts

If information changes, the agent corrects the outdated fact. If a user asks the agent to forget something, such as "Forget that I write in TypeScript," the agent deletes the matching fact.

## Memory Scope

Memory is tied to a pair of an agent and an authenticated user:

- All conversations between one agent and the same user share one set of facts.
- A different agent keeps its own set of facts about that user.
- Facts of different users are stored separately, even when they talk to the same agent.

The **Memory** tab shows only the current user's facts. This applies to the account owner too: you can't view the memory of other users or switch to another user.

## Limits

- **Facts per agent**: 1,000. The limit is shared by all users of the agent. The **Memory** tab shows the number of facts for the current user, not the agent's total usage.
- **Fact size**: up to 10,000 characters.
- **Where memory applies**: the [external agent chat](https://hostman.com/docs/ai-agents/manage-agents/external-chat/) and the [API](https://hostman.com/docs/ai-agents/api-usage/). In other interfaces, such as the website widget, memory isn't used even when it's enabled.
- **Settings level**: Memory is enabled or disabled for the agent as a whole, not for individual users.

## Enable Memory

You can enable it when you create an agent or in the settings of an existing one.

### When Creating an Agent

1. In the agent creation form, go to the **Pricing and Limits** step.
2. Turn on the **Use memory** option.

### In Agent Settings

1. Go to **AI Services** → **Agents** and select the agent.
2. Open the **Memory** tab.
3. Click **Enable Memory**.
4. Click **Enable** to confirm.

## Disable Memory

1. Go to **AI Services** → **Agents** and select the agent.
2. Open the **Management** tab.
3. Turn off the **Saving information about users...** option.

The agent stops using memory and no longer saves new facts about users.

Disabling memory doesn't delete saved facts. They become available again when you re-enable memory. To remove them, [delete the facts manually](https://hostman.com/docs/ai-agents/manage-agents/memory/#delete-a-fact).

## Manage Facts

Saved facts appear in the **Memory** tab, where you can view, edit, and delete them. Memory must be enabled to manage facts.

You can also add and delete facts by asking the agent: "Remember that…" or "Forget that…".

### Add a Fact

1. Go to **AI Services** → **Agents** and select the agent.
2. Open the **Memory** tab.
3. Click **Add fact** or **Add**.
4. Enter the content of the fact.
5. Click **Save**.

The new fact appears in the list.

### Edit a Fact

1. Go to **AI Services** → **Agents** and select the agent.
2. Open the **Memory** tab and click the fact you want to edit.
3. Change the content of the fact.
4. Click **Save**.

### Delete a Fact

Deleted facts can't be restored.

1. Go to **AI Services** → **Agents** and select the agent.
2. Open the **Memory** tab.
3. Click the three dots next to the fact and select **Delete fact**.
4. Confirm the action.

### Delete All Facts

This deletes all facts about the current user for the selected agent. Facts of other users aren't affected. Deleted facts can't be restored.

1. Go to **AI Services** → **Agents** and select the agent.
2. Open the **Memory** tab.
3. Click the broom icon above the list of facts.
4. Confirm the action.

Deleting all facts doesn’t [disable memory](https://hostman.com/docs/ai-agents/manage-agents/memory/#disable-memory), so the agent can keep saving new facts about the user.
